General computer related projects and research:

2004/2005: Master Thesis: I was investigating the globalising effects of information and communication technologies in a community setting in South Africa. Research questions were critically addressing the use of information and communication technologies in a local community context, through its role and anticipated practice. Throughout the thesis ICT is conceptualised as globalising agents actively including, re-configuring and re-constructing the community itself, concluding that ICT does have multiple impacts on local settings and that these should be considered when integrating technologies in disadvantaged districts as a counter means for meeting the challenges of globalisation. Technologies investigated in the thesis include Tele Centres and CSIR's Digital Doorway. A full version is available for download at my web site: http://www.jakobp.dk

2003/2004: Internship: Undertook an internship, as a part of Master Studies. The internship was carried out at Uniglobe Duma Travel in Cape Town, South Africa and involved advanced web programming and designing interactive web content for the company website. This was first time for me in South Africa, introducing me to the hectic everyday of a, then, small BEE company. Good experience in having to face dead lines and materialise ideas within a limited time frame and good experience in using programming facilities.

2002/2003 Design Project: Design of Physical Programming Interface for LEGO Mind Storms. Part of a design course, carried out in cooperation with the university's Department of Experimental Computer Science. This involved several major participative work shop sessions with children from local schools. Data was collect using various audio/visual media, including observational data (Video) and qualitative interviewing (audio/video). This was a project, which to a high extent was focusing on interaction between materials and sociological practices. The outcome of this was creating a mock-up of a physical interactive interface for children. Project overview available on: http: (Danish only, but photos available)

2002 eDesign - Re-Thinking the Public School: Experimental joint course between University of Aarhus (Department of Media and Information Studies/Department of Experimental Computer Science) and the Aarhus School of Architecture, Department for Culture and Communication. The purpose of the course was to develop design methodologies for pro-actively combine physical spaces with digital technology. Projects relating to public schools were carried out in close cooperation with students of architecture. Public school teachers and school pupils were involved in participatory design workshops, based on qualitative interviewing, interpretation of photos etc.

2001: Bachelor project Organisation Analysis: Investigation of Organisational Impacts Through the Introduction of Intranet Software. Extensive qualitative interviews were carried out at local college Marselisborg, mainly involving college professors.

2000: University software exercise projects: Mainly graphical user interface design for data base and multi media software.
